Community Overview
The Ohio River is the defining natural feature of Southern Indiana. Its "falls" - really an extended rapids - originally made this area a stopping point for westward-bound traders and settlers. Although the largest city that grew up around the falls, Louisville, is on the Kentucky side, a substantial number of people settled on the north side of the river in what is now Southern Indiana.
The counties that make up the Indiana portion of Greater Louisville have their own unique identity and economy, and many newcomers are drawn to Southern Indiana's affordable housing and land. There's no doubt that the best views of Louisville can be had from the north side of the river, especially from the hills, called "knobs", that frame the floodplain on the Indiana side.
For business, the region is considered to have one of the best accesses to the interstate highway system in the country. Southern Indiana can provide you with barge transportation; excellent railroad service; and commercial and general aviation services at Clark County, Indiana Airport and Louisville International Airport and Bowman Fields in Louisville.
Clark and Floyd Counties are part of the Greater Louisville (KY) Metropolitan Statistical Area (total population over 900,000). Interstate highways running through the region include: I-65, I-64, I-71, I-265 and I-264.
